Cosmetics come in a wide variety of categories. Powder, water, lotion, mud, cream and makeup all rely on matching containers. The products themselves have no fixed shape and rely entirely on packaging design to highlight their positioning and value. The choice of materials directly determines the brand's grade. From the perspective of the overall market pattern, plastic packaging is the absolute mainstream at present, with very prominent advantages. Plastic bottles are lightweight and have low production costs. They can be customized in various shapes such as transparent, solid color, and different sizes. It has strong printing adaptability. Thermal transfer, inkjet printing, screen printing and other processes can all directly print labels, barcodes and product descriptions on the bottle body. The popularization of PET resin has further driven plastic to widely replace glass bottles. Nowadays, plastic packaging takes up over 80% of the cosmetics market and is the preferred container for mass beauty products.
In contrast, the market share of glass material is less than 8%, far smaller than that of plastic, but it firmly holds the high-end beauty market and cannot be replaced in the short term. Firstly, there is the advantage of texture. Glass can be made into a transparent smooth surface or a high-end frosted finish, which naturally exudes an exquisite and luxurious texture and can quickly enhance consumers' trust in the product. This is a characteristic that plastic cannot replicate. The vast majority of perfumes on the market are in glass bottles. For instance, Bulgari's Eau de Toilette for women uses a streamlined frosted green glass bottle. The simple lines combined with the warm green color convey the brand's elegant and gentle tone, exuding a strong sense of luxury.
Secondly, it has an extremely strong sealing and barrier performance. Whitening and nourishing skin care products are rich in active nutrients and are highly prone to oxidation and failure. Perfumes and fragrances are highly volatile, and both require high-barrier packaging to isolate air. Glass bottles have a much better ability to isolate oxygen than plastic ones, which can protect the activity of the contents for a long time and delay deterioration. Therefore, high-end functional skin care products and well-known perfumes will give priority to glass packaging.
In the long run, plastic will continue to focus on the affordable mass beauty market, while the development direction of glass bottles is clear. They will continue to focus on the high-end route, enhance the technological content of the process, and rely on their unique texture and sealing advantages to maintain an irreplaceable competitiveness in the high-end beauty market for a long time.
