Beer is a daily drink. It is almost always bottled in glass bottles and plastic packaging is rarely seen. This is not a habit, but the optimal solution determined by safety, flavor and craftsmanship together.
From the perspective of food safety, beer contains alcohol and various organic substances. Plastic is an organic polymer material, and its additives and low-molecular organic substances may dissolve in the liquor. Long-term consumption poses health risks. Glass is an inorganic silicate material with extremely stable chemical properties. It does not react with wine and does not release harmful substances, making it a food-grade safe container.
Flavor and shelf life are another key factor. Beer is highly sensitive to oxygen and light, and is prone to oxidation, spoilage and the development of a solar odor. Plastic has poor barrier properties, making it easy for oxygen to seep in and carbon dioxide to escape, which significantly shortens its shelf life. Glass bottles have extremely strong air tightness, which can strictly control the oxygen content and carbon dioxide loss, meeting the shelf life requirement of more than 120 days. Meanwhile, glass is heat-resistant and can withstand the pasteurization high-temperature process, while plastic is difficult to meet the standards.
Glass bottles also have the advantages of high hardness, no deformation, suitability for automated filling, convenient stacking and storage, and recyclability. Although it has disadvantages such as heavy weight, high energy consumption and fragility, its overall cost performance is still leading.
At present, there have been breakthroughs in the technology of PET plastic beer bottles, but their high barrier properties and high-temperature resistance are costly, which limits their large-scale application. Plastic packaging may become slightly popular in the next 3 to 10 years, but the mainstream market will still be dominated by glass bottles. For consumers, beer in glass bottles is more reassuring and offers a more stable taste, providing a dual guarantee of quality and safety.
